    Kenya Tree Coral (Taro Tree)
    Family: Nephtheidae

Original donation to the Donor Program by ajlaman.

    Difficulty: Beginner
    Feeding: None
    Lighting: Low to Moderate
    Water Flow: Low to Moderate

Description: The Taro Tree Coral, also referred to as a Kenya Tree Coral, is similar to the members of both the Litophyton and Nephthea genera. It has a thick trunk, like a tree, and many branches giving it an arboreal appearance. The parent colony of these coral frags was acquired from one of the aquariums in our company and then quarantined and given a health inspection before being propagated.
It is not normally considered a threat to hard corals, but may itself be disturbed by their presence. The Taro Tree Coral relies less on the symbiotic algae within it, and depends more on obtaining outside food. Microplankton, marine snow, and dissolved materials should make up the bulk of its diet. These corals are attached to a square aragonite plug and can be easily placed in holes or between the rockwork of the reef aquarium.

Hardiness: The Kenya Tree readily adapts to most water conditions and easily thrives under good lights. Growth can be very rapid with the correct conditions.

Feeding: The Kenya Tree mainly relies on light that is provided for it, but do absorb Strontium and Iodine from the water column so these supplements may be added if water changes aren’t performed regularly.

Lighting: It will do well under moderate light. Power Compacts and VHOs are sufficient for them, and even do well under Metal Halides and T5s. Caution should be taken with more powerful lighting as not to damage them with too much light if the coral is not used to it.

    Water Flow: Medium to strong
